Composition and Visual Structure Seen from above, the pool forms a bright oval encircled by rocks and forest. Steam rises at left and center, turning the shoreline into revealed and hidden passages. The high torii complex is balanced by the largest plume. Foreground foliage completes a bowl-like enclosure. Color and Light Turquoise water dominates a field of blue-black green. Golden foliage descends centrally, connecting the skyless canopy to the pool. Vermilion gates concentrate warmth at upper right, repeated by a small red plant below. Creamy steam mediates between cool water and sunlit leaves. Technique and Surface Layered, broken strokes give the scene a richly worked surface. Flecked yellows describe leaf-light, heavy angular marks construct volcanic rocks, and broader turquoise strokes keep the water calm. Steam is especially successful: warm opaque centers dissolve into gray translucent edges, communicating heat and depth. Soft distant foliage contrasts with sharply stated foreground fronds. Theme and Interpretation The pool appears a natural sanctum before architecture names it sacred. The torii provides cultural meaning, but steam controls visibility, veiling subterranean power. The elevated view invites contemplation rather than entry. Radiance surrounded by darkness suggests purification, renewal, and guarded revelation. Suggestions for Development The central steam column and golden trees nearly merge because both are bright. A few cooler gray gaps between them could improve separation. The right shoreline contains several competing verticals from trunks, railings, and posts; simplifying one or two would give the torii a cleaner silhouette. Preserve the dark foreground ring, whose weight makes the pool appear jewel-like.
